*The habitat of the finch heavily depends on what type of beak and body shape it has, so for clarification, below the habitat of the finch is classified with its beak type.
Probing Beak
The probing beaked finches live in lands and habitats that require them to penetrate a surface or hold a tool in its mouth to get their nutrition. There are 3 types of finches that have probing bills, and these are:
- The Cactus Finch, or the Geospiza Conirostris. As you can tell from the name, this finch feeds itself from the cactus and lives in the arid lowlands. It feeds itself from the Opuntia cactus. This finch lives in the islands Genovesa and Hood.
- The Warbler Finch, or the Certhidea Olivacea. This finch eats insects and lives in the zone Scalesia Zone, a zone that is rich and humid, and is made of an evergreen forest that has a vast amount of daisy trees that the warbler finch feeds off of.
- The Woodpecker Finch, or the Camarynchus Pallidus. This last finch also lives in the Scalesia Zone, but it is also found in the arid lowlands even though it is a more rare sight there. This bird is one of the most famous as it has developed a very unique beak shape, and it is one of the two finches that uses tools for its nutrition, which implies that this species is more evolved in the aspect of survival.
Parrot- Like Beaks
There is only 1 finch that is classified with a parrot-like beak, and this is the Vegetarian Tree Finch.
The Vegetarian Tree Finch, or the Platyspiza Crassirostris is a species of finch that feeds itself from forests that are in high and middle elevations, and it only eats plants, leaves, soft seeds and fruits as its name suggests. It has some adaptations that are very similar to the ones of a parrot, including its wing and body shape.

Grasping Beaks
There are only 2 types if main finches in the grasping-beaked category, and these 2 would be the Large Insectivorous Finch and the Small Insectivorous Finch.
- The Large Insectivorous Finch, or the Camarhynchus Psittacula eats insects as its name suggests. Since it eats insects it primarily lives evergreen forests that are between the altitudes of 300-700 meters, but they are also found in the lowlands that contain deciduous trees along with shrubs and cacti.
- The Small Insectivorous Finch, or the Camarhynchus Parvulus has the same diet as the Camarhynchus Psittacula (Large Insectivorous Finch), and is almost identical except for its stature.
Crushing Beaks
In this last category, crushing beaks, there are 4 types of finches, and these finches are the Sharp-beaked Ground Finch, and the Small, Medium, and Large Ground Finches.
- The Sharp-beaked Ground Finch, or the Geospiza Difficils eats seeds, just like the other birds in this category, but is also nicknamed the Vampire Finch because it is known to drink the blood of Seabirds that are also called boobies. This particular species stands out from the rest as it is more widely spread across the 20 islands of the Galapagos. It lives on the Islands Wolf, Darwin, Genovesa, and more rarely seen in some of the other Islands. It feeds off of the Opuntia cactus, Croton Scouleri shrub, and in forests with deciduous instead of evergreen trees.
